South Korea asked Mexico to begin negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the two and conclude them no later than 2017, to be approved by the current administrations of their respective governments.
Negotiations for a bilateral FTA were suspended in 2008, one of the main reasons for this was the lack of Korean investment in Mexico, which has been resolved with the 3,000 million dollars that a Korean company will spend in Mexico.
South Korea expects negotiations to start next October, with the expectation that trade liberalization will face less resistance this time from Mexican industrial sectors, especially the automotive and steel sectors, who opposed bilateral liberalization in 2008.
South Korea operates free trade agreements with Canada and the United States and is one of the first countries that is expected to join the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP, for its acronym in English),
If the TPP enters into force and with the imminent entry of South Korea, trade liberalization between Mexico and that Asian country has a high probability.
Given its strong infrastructure in maritime and air cargo transport, South Korea is not only an end point in the trade of goods and services, but also a center for expansion into other markets.
